what is a home care package

Since July 2015, seniors in Australia have been given more control over the type of care they would like to receive and who provides it. The number of home care packages will be increased.

What Is a Home Care Package?

Like many seniors, you may wish to remain in your own home. Whilst family, friends and other community services may give you some assistance, you could find that a home care provider is best for particular tasks. Here are just a few ways that providers can help meet your health, personal care and home maintenance needs.

Personal Care

Home Maintenance

  • Medication
  • Wound care
  • Exercise
  • Counselling
  • Showering
  • Toileting
  • Grooming
  • Mobility assistance
  • Cleaning
  • Washing
  • Errands
  • Cooking

There are four levels of care available. Levels one and two support people with lower level needs. Levels three and four support people who need greater care.

Who Provides Home Care?

You now have the flexibility to choose your home care provider and work with them to design a home care package which suits your individual needs. The government pays a subsidy to the provider you choose. The level of care you are receiving determines the amount of the subsidy. The government’s My Aged Care website details how you can be assessed for financial assistance.

An Aged Care Assessment Team can confirm your eligibility and offer a list of home care providers in your area. You can then compare their services and prices. This government booklet clearly outlines the steps you should take.

Will I Lose My Independence?

A home care package is designed to give you support only in areas where you need it, therefore allowing you to retain independence. Explore your options for a home care package today in order to enjoy a better quality of life.
